Acupuncture in Mesa, AZ Reduces Symptoms of PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD for short, is an anxiety disorder that can occur after one is exposed to an extreme traumatic stressor. Most people associate PTSD with those who have served in the military; however it can affect anyone who has been involved or witnessed a catastrophic event. PTSD affects everyone differently. PTSD symptoms commonly develop shortly after the event, however it can take several months or years before symptoms arise.  Some symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, loss of interest in activities, irritability, sleep difficulties, difficulty concentrating, hyper-vigilance, and exaggerated startle response.

The use of acupuncture has been studied for treatment of those with PTSD and other anxiety disorders.  A study published in June 2007 in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease reported, “Acupuncture was able to reduce PTSD symptoms, while also continuing to reduce those symptoms even three months after treatment ended.” Acupuncture works by using thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Research shows that acupuncture helps to increase your body’s natural production of endorphins which are your feel good neurotransmitters. The increase in endorphins leads to a decrease in stress and anxiety. This is just one of the many positive effects that acupuncture can have on the symptoms of PTSD. If you are looking for a safe and natural way to manage your PTSD symptoms, acupuncture may benefit you. Below is some additional information on the use of acupuncture and PTSD.
