Acupucnture May Help with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway composed of ligaments and bones at the base of the hand/ wrist. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel. The Median Nerve is responsible for sensation on the palm side of the hand into the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The median nerve also is responsible for movement of some of the muscles in the hand.  Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment or compression of the median nerve. Some symptoms of CTS include pain, numbness, tingling, and burning sensation in parts of the wrist, hand, and fingers. The excessive pressure on the median nerve can be due to various causes including anything that increase swelling such as diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, and even pregnancy.  Also, the overgrowth of bone in the area due to arthritis can compress the carpal tunnel leading to increased pressure on the median nerve. Treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome vary from NSAID’s to surgery. However the use of conservative therapies is becoming increasingly popular.

Acupuncture is a type of conservative therapy. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese Medicine Technique that has been utilized for thousands of years. Acupuncture has been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.  Acupuncture is the use of thin sterile needles into specific points on the body. In January 2012 a study was published in the Journal of Research and Medical Sciences. It looked at 64 patients with carpal tunnel.
